Hrm. Incoming rant warning and slight spoilers.
Okay, so on a whole, I really did like this series. It was plenty thrilling, and I liked the character of Lisbeth Salander for the most part. However, with the author’s untimely death, it feels a bit unfinished, as certain characters that have been mentioned in passing never show up, and I think they have an important story to tell. **coughtwinsistercough**
Anyway, what REALLY bothers me is the character of Mikael Blomkvist. He is ABSURD. While he is doing his journalistic detectivey stuff, then he’s pretty cool, and I like that. However, his personal relationships with women is COMPLETELY OBNOXIOUS. Yes, this is all caps. It’s how irritated I am by him. Pretty much any woman he meets, she falls madly in love with him and sleeps with him. It’s absolutely ridiculous. And he’s all, “I’m not looking for a relationship” and they’re all, “Okie dokie” or “Well… I’m not too keen on that, but you’re so irresistible, I have this compulsion to rip off all my clothes” and I’m all, “YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING.” Married women, single women, self-proclaimed bachelorettes, bisexual women, whatever; into bed they go with him. What’s even more annoying–I have no idea what he looks like, other than, “average, ordinary guy.” I checked in the first book to see if Larsson ever described him, and that’s all I could find. The most we got was he’s like 45, I think. I don’t think it’s really possible to get any more Gary Stu-ish. Even Bella Swan has more of a look than he does. (It pained me to write that sentence, but it’s true.)
And the woman he supposedly ends up with, I think… Bland. So bland. Their relationship is like cardboard and is built on nothing. I feel absolutely no chemistry between them at all. Boring as all hell. There’s at least two other women in the books with which he has infinitely more chemistry.
To be fair, Blomkvist’s sister admits he’s a complete ass.
The original Swedish title of the first book is “Män som hatar kvinnor” or “Men who hate women.” I wonder sometimes who exactly the author is talking about.
