I was grumpy/stressed during this entire convention. You can tell because I didn’t take a single cosplay photo. That happens sometimes, and I always regret it later. Plus I ended up getting sick. Really sorry about not getting any cosplay though. Boo.
One thing I really really hate about Fanime, which automatically starts the con off on a bad foot is their HORRIBLE badge system. 40K people attend, and they have seriously about FIVE people checking people in. By hand. Very slowly. Lines to get in take 2-3 hours. Standing in the sun. It is AWFUL. I’ve been going for ten years now, and watched it get worse and worse as the con gets more and more popular, and they still do the SAME THING. All of my other cons have switched to barcodes. YES it means you don’t get a nice fancy badge because the badge is printed up on the spot, but hey, if it means waiting in a 20 minute line instead of a frigging three hour line, then BY ALL MEANS, switch to paper badges!!
Anyway, on to the pics.
We hit an industry panel for a change of pace for AX. Yumi Sato (left, animation producer at Brain’s Base) and Takahiro Omori (right, director, often at Brain’s Base). Together, they’ve worked on such anime as Princess Jellyfish and Natsume’s Book of Friends, two of my favorites. I really liked hearing them speak; they also revealed that an OAV of Natsume was coming out soon. Sadly, no news for more Princess Jellyfish yet.
Gilles Poitras is a repeat guest of honor at Fanime, and we’ve attended two of his panels in the past. This year was a talk on traveling in Japan which was super informative, if I ever have the chance to go back. He’s always a delightful and knowledgeable speaker. We still have not attended his Sex Trade in Anime/Manga panel, much to the disappointment of my friend. Maybe next year!

I’ve decided that I prefer the lengua taco at La Victoria over my usual breakfast burrito with chorizo. Always with the orange sauce though! This year between all of us, we took home 12 bottles. I think the cashier thought we were insane.
Delicious strawberry beer. Er… ignore the olive pits in the background.
Didn’t pick up too much this year. Just several Yotsuba& figures, which I was crazy excited about.
Comics and manga. I was really excited to get this volume of Genshiken, as this part of the manga never got animated.
Magnets and pins from my friend Katrina’s booth. I got the VERY ULTRA LIMITED (i.e. there’s only one) Lumpy Space Princess Onigiri pin!
