This year saw the return of Shaz to Fanime! Hooray! The Terrible Cult is reunited once again! Sadly, this may have also been our last Fanime, as two members seem to be over it, which bums me out to no end because I look forward to Memorial Day Weekend every year, and I know we’ll never get our act together for a regular meet up otherwise. Fanime gave us an excuse and a solid date for meeting up every year.
This was also the year that Fanime FINALLY got their act together re: registration, and there was ZERO LINE. Seriously. Last year and the year before we waited like 3 hours for our badges. It was obscene. I was dreading this year, and wondering how they would mess it up. This year was a breeze and I loved it. So thank you Fanime!
Onto the con!
We attended three panels this year but I didn’t get any pictures, as they all came out terribly. We went to the Viz panel, where there were some release dates announced of upcoming manga, and I’m looking forward to Monster by Naoki Urasawa, Yukarism by Chika Shiomi, and interested in trying Assassination Classroom by Yusei Matsui. They also reannounced their money making machine of relicensing Sailor Moon, complete with Sailor Stars, and redubbed with the Japanese names and all original genders and relationships restored (no more weird “cousins” between Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune!).
We also attended the Most Hilarious Bootlegs panel, which was at full capacity, and was pretty great. Favorites included seeing a Street Fighter type game with Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, a blond Ryo, and Goku; a GTA game whose packaging included the GTA protagonist, alongside Mario, Sonic, and Spongebob; and a Mario game whose packaging featured Snow White, a scary goat-man, Sonic, and Captain Crunch.
Our final panel was by Gilles Poitras who is our favorite presenter, and he did an informative panel on the Kappa. He said he wants to do about 2 monster panels a year now, which was another reason I was sad that this may be our last Fanime. Upcoming panels include tengu and tanuki. Things we learned about the kappa: they’re known for farting, as they have three anuses. And a Japanese phrase which translates to something like, “it’s a kappa’s fart” means our phrase of “oh that’ll be a piece of cake.” He showed an interesting book that I want to pick up called Yokai Attack! which is set up like a survival guide for yokai rampages.

Didn’t get a whole lot of food pics this time, which I’m a bit bummed about because I wanted to at least get a picture of the best lengua taco EVER. But I would always forget and remember halfway through it. That was my breakfast all 3 days at Fanime, minus the first day, which was this lovely lovely strawberry and cream cronut.
This is my favorite cronut in LA. Granted, I’ve only had 2, but the one that was from the fancy bakery is nothing compared to this one which comes from DK Donuts (24 hours!). My friends wanted one, so I was getting a bunch at 5 in the morning. I ate this one pre-flight.
We also got to relive our fabulous mystery Doritos adventure from several Fanimes ago where we consumed a bag of cheeseburger Doritos which were the bomb. This year, there were THREE mystery bags. I bought them all and brought them to Fanime with me. TSA probably thinks I’m nuts, since my carry on was chips and donuts. Of these 3, we were only able to positively identify the blue bag, which was mole (and not bad). The red one we’re guessing is like… blue cheese buffalo wings, or cheesy sriracha (T and my favorite). The yellow one we have no idea. It was sweet (molasses), and limey, and the internet says maybe citrus BBQ or even some weird Mountain Dew monstrosity. It was vegan though, so G ate most of that bag.
With Shaz back in the group after like a five year hiatus, G & I were able to go to one of our favorite restaurants for Fanime, Old Spaghetti Factory. Yeah, yeah, nothing special about it. But it’s cheap, and you get a salad, entree, and dessert. I always get the mizithra spaghetti. Autropos also drew me another *lovely* piece of art.
On our way out of San Jose, we made one last stop at La Vic’s, and between the four of us there, we bought 17 bottles of orange sauce. We’re a bit looney. Then the cashier made a mistake of telling us we could order it online and have it mailed to us, so there goes that. G says orange sauce goes with pretty much everything, and he puts it on EVERYTHING. I ate it on my oatmeal yesterday morning. Pretty good. Also excellent on scrambled eggs. And what it’s supposed to go on, which is burritos.
Contrary to what I thought I was going to drink, I didn’t drink that much for a four day party, and there was no sicknesses or hangovers, so yay (that would be Fanime 2006)! Five beers, two bloody marys, one alcoholic root beer float, 9 sips of other drinks.
Other places we went: Philz Coffee (our fave coffee place up north), Billy Berk’s (got our calamari with deep fried lemon slices, and some awesome guacamole), Blackbird Tavern (a FABULOUS new restaurant that hopefully survives, as it’s in a high turnover spot–awesome waitress and great food–deviled eggs, cajun potstickers, shrimp and grits, chocolate pudding, and some drink called a spiced mule of which Autropos had about 8), and Los Gatos Brewing, another fave restaurant which has a very nice beer selection. Autropos also made us the Terrible Cult’s Official Meal of bacon fried rice and blueberry muffins. Wheeeee!
Oh yeah, we also went to McD’s to use their restroom, but had to buy something, so we ended up with this monstrosity:
Just go DIAF already, Happy Meal Mascot.

I’m SO DEPRESSED that I didn’t get a picture of my FAVORITE cosplay, which I saw, but was unable/to self-conscious to chase down (she was leaving, and I always feel bad stopping them and asking them for a picture if they’re leaving). This was the Eren’s mother getting eaten by a Titan cosplay. It was FABULOUS. I’m also bummed that I didn’t get a picture of the Hozuki cosplayers (that I didn’t see, but saw someone else saw them), and the five billion Nudist Beach cosplayers, now that I know who they are (a week too late). There were some very nice looking Nudist Beach people… but I hate taking cosplay pics of people I don’t know what the heck they’re cosplaying.
Anyway, I did get a few, although again, I wasn’t in the best of cosplay picture moods.
One Piece gathering. I really just wanted a picture of Bartholomew Kuma. Crocodile was pretty neat too.

Ursula and a male Ariel.

Disney Princesses… and another Ursula, who looked fabulous. Love her dress. Unsure of what the fairy (?) thing is?

Unikitty from Lego Movie.

Lego Batman and Retro Astronaut from Lego Movie.

Shopping time! As always, I spent too much. This year Artist Alley was sent through a jury system, which means people had to submit portfolios. This totally upped the quality of art available, which meant we spent a TON. And unlike Wondercon, there was a LOT of Hannibal fanart. Shaz and I went a bit crazy.
Because of the sheer amount I bought, I limited myself to just one gunpla, from Build Fighters. I also picked up some pens.

Sarah Stone did all the art for the Fanime program, and also had a table, where I bought ALL of her Transformers stuff because, Oh My God. I also asked her to sign my Windblade #1. I’m kinda sad now I didn’t buy Fanime’s speedo man, who was divine. We did buy one for G because he delighted in poking him in the package. Eeeee, Knockout!

Hannibal fanart from various vendors. The puppet one is also by Sarah Stone. And more Will & puppies for me!

Miscellaneous goodies. Nyanko-sensei socks, Moyashimon blind box figures, Kuroko bookmarks, Hannibal lanyard, LSP and Totoro magnets, Kuroko and Hannibal button (another Will & puppies). Also (close up):
A Hannigram phone charm. SO CUTE.

So I found this new artist that specializes in Yowapeda and Jojo’s fanart. She is AMAZING. I bought almost all her Yowapeda stuff. These were all the buttons she had, which is interesting, as no Onoda or Imaizumi. She said she’d have more at AX though, hopefully. So I will have more buttons then, too…

These prints though were my prize. The two big ones were by the same artist who did the buttons, and they are AMAZING. I can’t wait to put these up. The colors are lovely. Even my friend, who hasn’t watched a single episode of Yowapeda, bought the Midousuji one just for the color palette (he likes weird stuff). He also bought a really nice subtle Jojo one. I can’t wait to see her at AX again and see what she has there. I also got a super cute SD Yowapeda bag for my purse, and a couple more Toumaki prints. No Haikyuu prints, although I thought about a couple. Maybe at AX.
